Itching, irritation, and discomfort can be frustrating foot problems. Ultimately, if left untreated, it will only get worse. With flip-flop season just around the corner, it’s time to get those feet taken care of.

Here are some of some things to look out for before breaking out your feet to the elements:

Toenail Cutting

Cutting your toenails is a good idea. You shouldn’t cut them too short or round the top as this can put pressure and cause discomfort in your feet as well as potentially lead to ingrown toenails.

When cutting your toenails, you should ensure they are cut flat and straight across inline with the end of your toe; you can then file down any rough edges or sharp corners.

Calluses

You should check for any calluses on your foot. The best way to remove calluses is to visit a professional; however, if you prefer to do it yourself you should exfoliate the dry skin before bathing with an emery board. Make sure to moisturise following this with foot cream, as this will give your feet a clean and refreshed appearance by making the skin feel nourished. Try not to apply to moisturiser between your toes and moisture can gather here and potentially lead to a fungal infection.

Athletes Foot

Athlete’s foot is a very common skin disorder, especially during the summer months. It’s highly contagious and can spread fast if untreated. Many men make the mistake of stopping treatments too early; what’s most important is to use ointments for a while after symptoms have cleared. It might also be wise to spray anti-fungal spray inside of shoes to prevent re-infection.

Verrucas

Verrucas are common in active feet and can be quite painful. They often spread to other parts of the foot and even to family members. SWIFT verruca treatment is quick and safe, and there is no aftercare required- which is great for younger patients!

Socks And Shoes

Some types of socks can help prevent foot infections, such as bamboo, hemp socks and moisture-wicking socks. They are comfortable to wear, ethical, and sustainable!

Shoes are important, even when it is not a physical activity. What shoes you wear has implications on your foot and ankle health. Be sure when buying new shoes you always try them on first to ensure they are the correct fit and have plenty of ankle and arch support. You should also try to buy shoes that are airy and breathable to prevent any moisture build up.
